This paper is for everyone interested in XEN® on IBM® server systems and its main focus lies on the technical details of an implementation. It is assumed that the reader interested in these details is somewhat familiar with Linux.
XEN is an open-source hypervisor available with the Linux® distributions from Red Hat® and Novell®. This document provides an overview of how XEN virtualization can be implemented on IBM System x® and BladeCenter® systems.
IBM gives in this paper an overview of the capabilities of XEN implementations and what is specific to IBM server systems. This is important in establishing a baseline for a fully supported configuration. A proof-of-concept run at IBM labs of a real-world implementation is introduced as a model case. The results gained from this proof-of-concept will allow us to discuss challenges and how these can be addressed today.
While interest for adoption of XEN is certainly on the increase, its main challenges lie in the area of tooling and integration with systems management. As a key element of IBM systems management tools, the capabilities and benefits of IBM Systems Virtualization Manager in a XEN environment are described. Finally we will provide recommendations on how XEN can be implemented on IBM server systems. Please note that there are many other XEN-based virtualization products available.
This paper is only focusing on the two Linux distributions certified on IBM System x and BladeCenter servers. Your requirements might not be met by these products.
