Intel Nehalem EX on IBM eX5 system
Thursday, 28 May 2009 08:37

Nehalem EX 64coresEarlier this week Intel held a press conference to advise the market of their intention to deliver a multiprocessor version of Nehalem. This is essentially a "vitality" announcement to ensure that the market, including investors, are aware that Intel has the next generation of high value processor in the works.
To prove their point, Intel wanted to show a system up and running with the new parts. IBM provided an "eX5" based system. The audience was able to see the screen with 64 cores and 128 threads up and running. It was a great opportunity for IBM to show the market again that they are the leaders in multiprocessor x86 and are Intel's best partner in the MP space.

IBM Announces QDR InfiniBand for Cluster 1350 and iDataPlex Solutions
Friday, 22 May 2009 07:35

qlogic-logo-214x42IBM is excited to announce the addition of the new QLogic 12000 Series of Quad Data Rate (QDR) InfiniBand switches to the Cluster 1350 BOM and iDataPlex offerings.  The QLogic 12000 Series represents a new class of InfiniBand switching for High Performance Computing. Based on the QLogic TrueScale™ QDR ASIC platform, these advanced 40Gb/s QDR switches are the next evolution in InfiniBand switches. The QLogic 12000 Fabric Directors support High Performance Computing (HPC), database clustering and grid utility computing applications; they maximize cluster and grid computing interconnect performance while simplifying and reducing data center costs. IBM is offering both Edge and Director class switches.  The 12200 and 12300 Edge switches are 1U self contained solutions that can also allow you to port out to a Director class switch. The 12800s are a completely modular family of Director class switches allowing complete flexibility of design. Units can be populated with Ultra High Density (UHD) leafs for maximum connectivity or Ultra High Performance (UHP) leafs for maximum performance.

Processor Value Unit (PVU) licensing
Thursday, 23 April 2009 10:08

Effective April 1, 2009, each processor core of the new Intel® Xeon® multi-core processor technology, commonly known as Nehalem, requires 70 Processor Value Units (PVUs) for software licensing. Given the significant performance improvement of the new Xeon multi-core processor technology, this licensing requirement is intended to provide software price performance improvements over the previous generation technologies likely to be replaced.

PVU licenses required for previous generation Intel Xeon multi-core processor technologies remain unchanged. PVU entitlements per core are based on processor technology, defined by processor vendor, brand, type, and model number. Processor model numbers are used to verify new versus previous generation Intel Xeon multi-core processor technologies.IBM® continues the practice of licensing to the processor core. This gives you the licensing granularity that you require, while also delivering the flexibility of configuring servers to support your business objectives most effectively. For the current PVU Table, that includes a list of processor model numbers for new and previous generation Intel Xeon multi-core processor technologies, visit http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html
