Multiple Remote Supervisor Adapter II Slimlines (RSA) have the same MAC Address
Thursday, 05 October 2006 04:20
Multiple Remote Supervisor Adapter II Slimlines may inadvertently have identical locally administered Media Access Control (MAC) addresses, e.g. 00:08:06:12:34. The same address may be listed as the "burned in" MAC address.

Symptom:
Multiple Remote Supervisor Adapter II Slimlines may inadvertently have identical locally administered Media Access Control (MAC) addresses, e.g. 00:08:06:12:34. The same address may be listed as the "burned in" MAC address.

Workaround
   1. Log into the RSA web interface with read/write capabilities.
   2. Under the ASM Control section of the interface, click Network Interfaces.
   3. On the next page, click the Advanced Ethernet Setup.
   4. Change the Locally administered MAC address to 00:00:00:00:00:00.
   5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page.
   6. Click the Restart ASM line of the web interface and select the Restart button on the next page.
   7. Close the web session when prompted.
   8. Wait 30 seconds, then log back into the RSA.
   9. Via the Advanced Ethernet Setup again, confirm that the burned-in MAC address RSA is now different than the locally administered MAC address, indicating that it is at the value originally burned in at the factory. As noted on the web interface of this page, with the locally administered MAC address set to 00:00:00:00:00:00, the burned-in MAC address takes precedence and should now reflect it's true value and be active.

Additional information
The full details of this issue are under investigation. It appears that the burned-in MAC address erroneously displays the locally administered MAC address instead of the MAC address burned in at the factory. By resetting the locally administered address to 00:00:00:00:00:00, the actual burned- in address is properly displayed once the RSA is reset according to the workaround.
The target for resolution is 4th Quarter, 2006.
