IBM leads TOP500 supercomputer list

top500The IBM Roadrunner system at Los Alamos National Lab again holds the No. 1 position as the world’s most powerful system, according to the latest TOP500 list of supercomputers.

IBM's leadership on the TOP500 list includes:

  • No. 1 system with Roadrunner -- nearly three times more energy-efficient than the No. 2 system
  • No. 1 system for 10 TOP500 lists in a row -- a new record
  • No. 1 in aggregate performance for 20 lists in a row
  • No. 1 in TOP20 with seven systems
  • No. 1 in TOP50 with 17 systems
  • No. 1 in TOP100 with 35 systems
  • Fastest systems in the U.S., Europe, Canada and the Middle East
  • Nineteen of the 20 most energy-efficient systems are from IBM

At this moment IBM Sequoia, a new Blue Gene/Q supercomputer being built for the U.S National Nuclear Security Administration at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The Sequoia system will go online in 2011 with a performance capability of 20 petaflops -- more than the combined performance of all the TOP500 supercomputers. Sequoia exemplifies IBM’s commitment to attain the next supercomputing milestone.
