You can expand the virtualization capabilities of IBM® Systems Director Virtualization Manager, version 1.2 with two additional extensions for IBM Director: IBM Systems Director Virtual Availability Management and IBM Systems Director Virtual Image Management
These extensions are enabled for a 90-day trial period when you install Virtualization Manager.
You can purchase these extensions to continue to access the additional features.
- Note: IBM Systems Director Virtualization Manager, version 1.2 is a prerequisite for installing the additional extensions.
IBM Systems Director Virtual Availability Management
IBM Systems Director Virtual Availability Management provides support for high availabity and dynamic and static relocation for Xen virtual servers.
- High Availibility Provides support that will automatically restart or relocate a virtual server, or notify you when a problem has been detected. High availability for Xen is supported on SUSE Linux® Enterprise Server 10 SP1. With IBM Systems Director Virtual Availability Management, you can define high availability policies within the Virtualization Manager interface. You can choose from several high availability policies:
- Notify Only - With this policy, you will receive event notifications when a virtual server or host fails unexpectedly. You will also receive event notifications if a hardware predictive failure alert (PFA) is surfaced, indicating that a piece of hardware needs to be repaired or replaced. No recovery actions are performed by Availability Management.
- Restart -With this policy, you authorize Virtualization Manager to restart virtual servers on a different host, if the host associated with the virtual servers fails or is restarted by a user. If Virtualization Manager discovers that a host is expected to fail soon, it will statically relocate its virtual servers to another host.
- Automatic Recovery - With this policy, you authorize Virtualization Manager to take a snapshot of your virtual servers at a defined interval, so that they can be recovered to that checkpoint, or snapshot in time. If a host fails or is restarted by a user, the virtual servers running on the host will be restarted on another host using the last checkpoint. If Virtualization Manager discovers that a host is expected to fail soon, it will actively relocate its virtual servers to another host.
Note: IBM Systems Director Virtualization Manager supports high availability for VMware HA and DRS as part of the base functionality in Virtualization Manager.
-
- Relocation Provides support for dynamic relocation for Xen virtual servers. Relocation for Xen is supported on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0 AS and ES.
IBM Systems Director Virtual Image Management
-
IBM® Systems Director Virtual Image Management provides support to create and manage images and system templates to expedite the process of creating and deploying virtual servers.
Some of the capabilities provided by IBM Systems Director Virtual Image Management include the following:
- Manage a library of ready-to-deploy system templates that meet specific hardware and software requirements.
- Store, copy and customize existing images to reuse them within system templates for creating virtual servers.
- Extract an image from a physical Linux® system to create new system templates and virtual servers.
- Create a system template based on an existing virtual server that includes an image in addition to running applications. You can reuse the system template to create multiple virtual servers.
IBM Systems Director Virtual Image Management is supported in the following virtualization environments:
- VMware ESX Server
- Xen POWER™ systems under the control of the Hardware Management Console (HMC) or the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM)
